Why we say caution
Twitch is a live streaming platform primarily focused on video games, though it now includes music, talk shows, "Just Chatting" streams, and more. Viewers watch streamers in real-time and interact through live chat. Streamers can earn money through subscriptions, donations, and ads.
- Live, Unmoderated ContentUnlike pre-recorded video, live streams can include anything. Streamers may swear, show inappropriate content, or have problematic interactions.
- Chat ToxicityTwitch chat is notoriously fast-moving and can include harassment, spam, and inappropriate content.
- Mature Categories"Just Chatting," "Pools, Hot Tubs, and Beaches," and other categories often contain suggestive content.
- Parasocial RelationshipsYoung viewers may develop unhealthy attachments to streamers or spend excessive time watching one person.
- Donation PressureStreamers actively encourage donations and subscriptions, and young viewers may feel pressured to give money.
Talk about it
- Who are your favorite streamers to watch?Understand their interests.
- Do you ever participate in chat?Assess interaction level.
- Have you seen anything inappropriate on Twitch?Opens discussion about content.
- How much time do you spend watching streams?Addresses screen time.
Settings to change first
Link your own Twitch account through Parental Controls (Settings > Family Center, since July 2026) to turn off going live and Whispers, set a daily time limit and filter labeled streams. Turn on all four chat filters. Keep mature content labels hidden. Review raid settings if they stream.
The complete Twitch parent guide, with age-by-age settings, is part of the Family plan.
The full guide
Twitch is the world's largest live streaming platform, popular for gaming, music, and "just chatting" content. Live streams present unique challenges for parental oversight.
Unlike pre-recorded videos, live streams can't be pre-moderated. Streamers may say or show inappropriate things before any action is taken.

Account Settings
Hide Mature Content by Label
Twitch replaced its old "Show Mature Content" toggle with Content Classification Labels. Streamers must label streams containing sexual themes, drugs or intoxication, gambling, violent and graphic content, mature-rated games, or significant profanity.
Here you can hide streams by label category (for example, Sexual Themes or Gambling) and blur preview thumbnails of sexually themed streams. For accounts registered as under 18, streams labeled Sexual Themes, Drugs/Intoxication, Violent and Graphic Depictions, and Gambling are hidden by default.
This only filters streams that streamers label correctly (some labels are applied automatically for mature-rated games). Not all inappropriate content is properly tagged, and filtering depends on the account's registered birthdate being accurate.
Enable Chat Filtering
Turn on filtering and all four filters: Discrimination, Sexually Explicit Language, Hostility, and Profanity. This applies to every channel your teen watches.
Privacy Settings
Who Can Whisper (DM)
Turn this on so only people your teen already knows on Twitch can Whisper them. To turn Whispers off completely, use Parental Controls (below).
Chat Safety
What Is Chat?
Live chat runs alongside streams where viewers comment in real-time.
Chat Risks
- Toxic behavior
- Inappropriate language
- Spam
- Links to dangerous sites
- Harassment
Chat Best Practices
- Read but don't participate (lurk)
- Don't share personal information
- Don't click links in chat
- Report harassment
Stream-Level Moderation
Each stream has its own rules and moderators. Quality varies widely.
Spending on Twitch
Bits
Virtual currency to "cheer" for streamers:
- Cost real money
- Animated emotes in chat
- Goes to streamer as payment
Subscriptions
Monthly subscriptions to channels (about $6–25/month in the US, more when bought in the mobile app):
- Ad-free viewing
- Exclusive emotes
- Subscriber-only chat
- Supports streamer financially
Donations
Direct payments to streamers through third-party services.
Preventing Spending
Remove any saved cards from the account's Wallet page (twitch.tv/wallet). Use Twitch gift cards for controlled spending.
Device Controls:
- iOS: Disable in-app purchases
- Android: Require authentication
- Don't store payment info
Following and Subscriptions
Following vs. Subscribing
- Following: Free, shows when they're live
- Subscribing: Paid monthly support
Manage Follows
Review who your child follows periodically. Discuss any concerns about specific streamers.
Content Categories
Gaming
Generally safest category, but:
- M-rated games are common
- Streamers may use mature language
- Competitive gaming can be toxic
Just Chatting
Streamers talk to audience. Content varies from family-friendly to inappropriate.
Music
Generally safe, but song content varies.
Pools, Hot Tubs, and Beaches
More adult-oriented category that may appear in recommendations.
IRL (In Real Life)
Streamers doing real-world activities. Quality and appropriateness varies.
Going Live (Streaming)
Age Requirement
Must be 13+ to stream. Since July 2026, a linked parent can turn off going live entirely through Parental Controls.
Should Your Child Stream?
Consider:
- Privacy exposure
- Dealing with chat
- Time commitment
- Online presence permanence
If allowing:
- Supervise early streams
- Set strict chat moderation
- Don't use real name/location
- Understand terms of service
Two-Factor Authentication
Enable to protect the account from theft.
Parental Supervision Tools
Parental Controls (Since July 2026)
Twitch launched optional Parental Controls for teens 13–17 in July 2026. You create your own Twitch account and link it to your teen's from the Family Center section of Account Settings (Settings > Family Center > Parental Controls). Once linked, you can:
- Choose which content classification labels your teen can see
- Turn off going live
- Turn off Whispers completely (sending and receiving)
- Set a daily time limit that applies on every device
- Get a weekly email of the channels they watched and for how long
The link ends automatically when your teen turns 18. It only works if the account has your teen's real birthdate, and in a few regions Twitch has started checking ages of younger teens with facial age estimation or a parent's confirmation.
Other Approaches
- Device Controls: Use iOS Screen Time / Android Family Link
- Router Controls: Block or schedule access to Twitch
- Open Communication: Discuss what they watch
- Periodic Check-ins: Ask about favorite streamers
Problematic Streamer Relationships
Parasocial Relationships
Teens may feel "close" to streamers who don't know they exist.
Healthy Perspective
Discuss:
- Streamers are entertainers, not friends
- They don't have personal relationships with viewers
- Supporting doesn't mean they owe you anything
- It's entertainment, not social connection
Age-Based Recommendations
We suggest Twitch for 14 and up. If your child is already on it younger, these are the settings to tighten for their age.

- Content classification labels hidden (all mature categories)
- Whispers off (through Parental Controls)
- Going live turned off

Ages 15-16
- Content classification labels hidden (all mature categories)

- Limited spending (if any)
- Know favorite streamers
- Regular check-ins
- Device time limits
Ages 17+
- Trust-based approach
- Moderate spending if allowed
- Open communication
