Why we say caution

TikTok is a short-form video platform where users create, share, and discover videos ranging from a few seconds to 10 minutes, with longer uploads allowed. The app's powerful algorithm learns user preferences quickly, creating a highly personalized "For You Page" (FYP) that can be both engaging and concerning for younger users.

  • Content ExposureThe algorithm may surface mature content including violence, sexual themes, dangerous challenges, or content promoting eating disorders, self-harm, or substance use.
  • Privacy RisksTikTok collects extensive user data. Videos posted publicly can be viewed by anyone worldwide, and location data may be embedded in content.
  • Contact from StrangersComments, LIVE chats and messages let unknown users reach your child. TikTok turns off DMs and Duets for under-16 accounts, but 16- and 17-year-olds can still get message requests unless you turn them off.
  • Mental Health ImpactStudies link heavy TikTok use to increased anxiety, depression, and body image issues, particularly in teen girls.
  • Addictive DesignThe infinite scroll and personalized feed are designed to maximize engagement, making it difficult for users to stop watching.

The full guide

TikTok is one of the most popular apps among US teens. Its recommendation algorithm learns quickly what keeps each person watching, and the app is open by design, so it is worth setting up together rather than leaving on the defaults.

Screen Time Management

Daily Screen Time Limit

Family PairingScreen Time

TikTok automatically applies a 60-minute daily limit to all accounts under 18. Through Family Pairing you can set your own limit, and vary it by day of the week.

When the limit is reached, your teen needs a one-time passcode from you to keep watching.

Time Away

Family PairingScreen TimeTime Away

Block TikTok entirely during specific hours:

  • Example: school hours, dinner, or after 9 PM
  • Different schedules for weekends
  • To use TikTok during Time Away, your teen has to ask you

Screen Time Dashboard

View your teen's usage:

  • Daily/weekly time spent
  • Day and nighttime usage
  • Time by activity type
Content Filtering

Restricted Mode

Family PairingRestricted Mode

Filters content that may not be appropriate for all audiences.

Turn this ON from your phone in Family Pairing, and your teen can't switch it off while you're linked.

Content Preferences

Settings and privacyContent preferences
  • Filter keywords: Hide videos with specific words
  • Refresh your For You feed: Start the feed over if it has drifted somewhere unhelpful
  • Not Interested: Train algorithm by marking videos

Mature Content Warning

TikTok shows warnings before certain videos. This is automatic and can't be adjusted.

Privacy Settings

Account Privacy

Family PairingDiscoverability

All teen accounts (13-17) start private. Teens under 16 can't change who comments or Duets, and 16- and 17-year-olds can switch to public unless you keep it private through Family Pairing.

Private Account: Only approved followers can see content Public Account: Anyone can view

Keep accounts private for safety.

This is off by default for teens. Leave it off, including suggestions from:

Set to "Only me" for privacy.

Direct Messages

Restricting DMs

Family PairingDirect Messages

For accounts under 16, direct messaging isn't available at all — TikTok disables the feature entirely.

For 16- and 17-year-olds, there are three groups, each of which you can set to Don't receive (from Family Pairing, or on their phone in Settings and privacy › Privacy › Direct messages):

  • Friends (followers they follow back): messages go straight to the inbox
  • Potential connections (accounts they follow, their followers and people they may know): messages arrive as message requests
  • Others on TikTok: can only send requests to a private account if they follow it

We suggest Don't receive for Potential connections and Others on TikTok, so only friends can message. Set all three to Don't receive to turn messages off.

Message Safety Features

Messages from people your teen doesn't follow arrive as requests they have to accept, and TikTok filters requests it flags as spam or offensive. Turning requests off is the simplest protection.

Live Streaming

Watching Lives

Lives may contain:

  • Inappropriate content
  • Gifting (virtual gifts cost real money)
  • Direct interaction with adults

Going Live

Hosts must be 18 or older (and, in most regions, have at least 1,000 followers), so a teen account can't go LIVE. Your teen shouldn't be able to stream unless they've given a false birth date.

Live Gifts

You must be 18 or older to buy Coins or send and receive LIVE gifts, so a teen account with the right birth date can't spend money this way. If you see Coin purchases, check the birth date on the account.

Algorithm Concerns

How It Works

TikTok's algorithm:

  • Learns from every interaction
  • Optimizes for watch time
  • Creates personalized "bubbles"
  • Can lead down rabbit holes

Problematic Content Paths

Innocent videos can lead to:

  • Eating disorder content
  • Self-harm content
  • Dangerous challenges
  • Extremist content
  • Inappropriate material

Managing the Algorithm

  • Mark videos "Not Interested"
  • Don't engage with concerning content
  • Refresh For You page periodically
  • Use keyword filters
Account Ages Under 16

TikTok applies additional restrictions to accounts of users under 16:

  • Private account, with no option to allow comments from everyone
  • Direct messaging unavailable entirely
  • Downloading their videos disabled
  • No one can Duet or Stitch their videos
  • Their videos aren't recommended in the For You feed
  • A wind-down prompt with calming music if they're still scrolling after 10 PM

All teens also have push notifications muted at night: from 9 PM for ages 13-15 and from 10 PM for ages 16-17.

  • Body image concerns
  • Spending excessive time
  • Anxiety when not using
  • Disrupted sleep
  • Mood changes tied to app

TikTok's Wellbeing Tools

  • Daily screen time limit and weekly screen time report
  • Sleep hours reminders
  • Breathing exercises and other wind-down tools

Find these in Settings and privacy > Time and well-being, which replaced the old screen time menu in late 2025.

Age-Based Recommendations

We suggest TikTok for 16 and up. If your child is already on it younger, these are the settings to tighten for their age.

Ages 13-14

  • Family Pairing required
  • 60-minute daily limit
  • Restricted Mode ON
  • Search disabled
  • DMs unavailable (TikTok turns them off under 16)
  • Private account
  • Frequent conversations
  • Review together periodically

Ages 15-16

  • Family Pairing recommended
  • 90-minute limit
  • Restricted Mode ON
  • DMs (from 16) to Friends only, message requests off
  • Private account
  • Discuss content critically
  • Check in on what their feed is showing them

Ages 17+

  • Family Pairing optional
  • Discuss responsible use
  • Trust-based approach
  • Open communication
  • Gradual independence
What If My Child Bypassed This?

Common Bypass Methods and Fixes

Family Pairing was disconnected

  • You get a notification when your teen unlinks, and the settings stay locked for 48 hours
  • Check by opening Family Pairing in your TikTok settings — if your teen isn't listed, they removed it
  • Reconnect by going through the Family Pairing setup again together
  • Have a direct conversation about why they disconnected it

Second TikTok account on same device

  • Check the account switcher on their profile for extra accounts
  • iOS Screen Time and Google Family Link can require your approval for new app installs, but they can't stop a second account inside TikTok
  • Check for "burner" Apple IDs or Google accounts used to bypass restrictions

Screen time passcode figured out

  • If they learned the one-time passcode or watched you enter it, issue the next one out of sight
  • Turn on Time Away for the hours that matter most, such as school and bedtime
  • Back it up with an app limit in iOS Screen Time or Family Link, which has its own passcode

Restricted Mode turned off

  • Restricted Mode set through Family Pairing can only be turned off from your phone — if it's off, the link was probably broken
  • Reconnect Family Pairing and verify Restricted Mode is ON again

Using a friend's device or account

  • This is harder to prevent technically — rely on conversation and trust
  • Discuss why the rules exist and what you're trying to protect them from

After a Bypass: Practical Steps

  1. Don't immediately escalate — ask calmly what they were doing and why
  2. Reconnect Family Pairing and re-enable all settings
  3. Consider temporarily reducing their daily limit as a natural consequence
  4. Revisit age-based recommendations — settings may need tightening or loosening
  5. Use it as an opportunity to renegotiate expectations together
