Telegram

Why we say take care

Telegram is a messaging app known for large group chats, public channels, and strong privacy features including optional end-to-end encryption. Unlike WhatsApp, users can be found by username without sharing phone numbers, and channels can broadcast to unlimited subscribers.

• Limited Content ModerationTelegram has historically taken a hands-off approach; it added private-chat reporting and court-ordered data sharing in late 2024, but channels with extreme, illegal, or harmful content persist.
• Username DiscoveryAnyone can search for and message your child if they have a public username.
• Public ChannelsEnormous channels exist with potentially harmful content, and recommendations can surface inappropriate material.
• Secret ChatsSelf-destructing messages and screenshot notifications create an environment for hidden communication.
• Bot InteractionsTelegram bots can be used for various purposes, including harmful ones.

Talk about it

• “Why do you use Telegram instead of other messaging apps?Understand the appeal.
• “What channels or groups are you following?Assesses content exposure.
• “Has anyone you don't know tried to message you?Addresses stranger contact.
• “Do you know what secret chats are for?Opens discussion about hidden features.

Settings to change first
