Our age is 16. Caution because of comparison pressure, a feed that is hard to put down, and contact from strangers if defaults are loosened.

Why we say caution
Instagram is a photo and video sharing platform owned by Meta. While originally focused on filtered photos, it has evolved into a multimedia platform featuring Stories (24-hour content), Reels (TikTok-style short videos), direct messaging, and live streaming. It's one of the most popular apps among teens.
- Body Image & Mental HealthInstagram's focus on appearance, filters, and "perfect" lives has been linked to depression, anxiety, and eating disorders in teens.
- Inappropriate ContentThe Explore page may show suggestive or mature content based on engagement patterns, even if your child hasn't sought it out.
- Contact from StrangersTeen Accounts block messages from strangers by default, but story replies, comments, and loosened DM settings can still allow unknown users to contact your child, including potential predators.
- CyberbullyingComments, group chats, and ephemeral content (Stories) are commonly used for bullying and exclusion.
- Privacy ConcernsLocation tags, photo metadata, and school uniforms/locations can reveal identifying information.

Understanding Instagram
Key Features
- Feed: Photos/videos from followed accounts
- Stories: Disappearing 24-hour posts
- Reels: Short-form video (like TikTok)
- Direct Messages (DMs): Private messaging
- Explore: Algorithm-recommended content
- Live: Real-time video broadcasting
Why Teens Use It
- Staying connected with friends
- Following celebrities and influencers
- Self-expression through photos
- Discovering trends
- FOMO (everyone's on it)
Teen Accounts (Under 18)
Automatic Protections
Instagram automatically applies these restrictions to accounts of users under 18:
- Private account by default: Only approved followers see content
- Restricted DMs: Only people they follow or are already connected to can message them
- 13+ content setting: Content guided by PG-13 movie ratings, the default since October 2025
- Hidden Words: Offensive comments and message requests filtered automatically
- Time limit notifications: Reminded after 60 minutes daily
- Sleep mode: Notifications muted and auto-replies on, 10 PM - 7 AM
- Live restrictions: Teens under 16 can't go Live without parental permission
- Nudity protection: Suspected nude images in DMs are blurred, and under-16s need your permission to turn this off
Can't Be Changed Without Parent (Under 16)
Teens under 16 can't change these settings to be less strict without a parent's permission through Supervision. Teens aged 16-17 get the same default protections but can adjust them on their own — unless Supervision is set up, in which case setting changes go through you. No teen can leave the 13+ content setting without a parent's permission.
A court-approved August 2026 settlement between Meta and 29 state attorneys general requires a default two-hour daily limit for US teens, a block on access from midnight to 6 AM, and like counts hidden by default, with a parent needed to loosen them. Meta has not said exactly when each change reaches the app, so check your teen's settings.
Setting Up Supervision
What is Supervision?
Meta's Supervision feature lets parents:
- See who their teen follows/is followed by
- See who they've been messaging (never the messages themselves)
- See time spent on Instagram
- Set daily time limits and block Instagram on set days and hours
- Adjust sleep mode hours
- Approve or deny requests to loosen settings
- Get notifications when teen reports someone
- Get an alert if your teen repeatedly searches for suicide or self-harm terms
One invitation can cover Instagram, Facebook, Messenger, Threads, and Meta Horizon.
Both Need Accounts
You and your teen both need Instagram accounts.
Send Invitation
On your Instagram:
Share the link with your teen. Invitations expire after 48 hours. Your teen can also send you a request instead.
Teen Accepts
Your teen must accept the invitation for Supervision to begin.
Configure Settings
Once connected, manage settings from the Family Center.
Time Limits
Daily Time Limit
When the limit is reached, Instagram closes for the rest of the day. The limit counts total time across all their devices.
Scheduled Breaks
Block Instagram on set days and times, such as school hours.
Sleep Mode
During Sleep Mode:
- Notifications silenced
- Auto-reply to DMs that they're unavailable
Default for teens: 10 PM - 7 AM. Parents can adjust it through Supervision.
Privacy Settings
Private Account
For teen accounts, this is ON by default. Teens under 16 can't switch to public without parental approval; 16-17-year-olds can change it themselves unless Supervision is active.
Activity Status
Turn OFF so others can't see when your teen is online.
Story Controls
Control who sees Stories.
Close Friends
Stories can be shared with only Close Friends—discuss this feature.
Direct Messages
Who Can Message
For teen accounts:
- Only people they follow or are already connected to can message them
- Adults they aren't connected to can't start a chat
- Offensive message requests are filtered by Hidden Words
Message Controls
Keep the Teen Account default. Under-16s need your permission to open it up.
Hidden Words
- Hide offensive comments: ON
- Hide message requests: Filters inappropriate message requests
- Custom words: Add words to hide
Content Controls
Sensitive Content Control
Since October 2025, teen accounts are guided by PG-13 movie-rating standards: all teens are automatically placed in the "13+" setting and can't opt out without a parent's permission.
Options for teens:
- 13+: Default — content similar to what you'd see in a PG-13 movie
- Limited Content: Stricter setting parents can apply through Supervision. It filters more content and turns off seeing, leaving and receiving comments on posts
Suggested Content
Control what appears in Explore based on interests.
Restricted Accounts
Restrict specific accounts:
- Their comments on your posts are only visible to them
- Their DMs go to message requests
- They can't see your activity status
Location Safety
Don't Tag Location
Advise your teen never to tag:
- Home location
- School
- Regular hangout spots
Remove Location from Old Posts
Review old posts and remove location tags.
Following Safety
Who to Follow
Discuss:
- Only follow people you know
- Be cautious of influencers' impact
- Quality over quantity of followers
Curate the Feed
Unfollow accounts that:
- Make them feel bad about themselves
- Post inappropriate content
- Create negative emotions
Viewing Others' Activity
Like Counts
Anyone can choose to hide like counts on posts they see and on their own posts. The August 2026 settlement will hide them by default for teens.
Following Activity
The "Following" activity tab was removed—can't see who friends follow.
Account Security
Two-Factor Authentication
Enable using authentication app or SMS.
Login Activity
Review where account is logged in. Remove unknown devices.
Password
Use strong, unique password. Don't share with friends.
Mental Health Considerations
Instagram and Body Image
- Filtered photos create unrealistic standards
- Comparison to others' "highlight reels"
- Edited photos are the norm
Signs of Concern
- Excessive photo editing/retaking
- Comparing themselves to influencers
- Mood changes tied to likes/comments
- Spending hours scrolling
- FOMO and anxiety
Healthy Conversations
- Social media isn't real life
- Likes don't define worth
- It's okay to unfollow accounts that make you feel bad
- Taking breaks is healthy
Reporting and Blocking
Block Users
Report Users/Content

What If My Child Bypassed This?
If your teen got around Instagram controls, approach it as a conversation first. Understanding the why is more useful than just re-locking settings.
Common Bypass Methods and Fixes
Supervision was disconnected
- Open Instagram Family Center — if your teen no longer appears, they removed the link (you get a notification when they do)
- Re-send the supervision invitation and discuss why it was removed
- Note: teens must accept Supervision — it cannot be forced on them
Account switched to public (teens under 16 need parental approval, but 16-17-year-olds can change it unless Supervision is active)
- Re-check account privacy settings together
- Confirm Supervision is active, which locks privacy settings for under-18 accounts
Time limit worked around on another device or account
- Supervision limits count total time across devices, so check the time-spent view in Family Center
- If the numbers look low, ask whether they're using a second account or the website
- Consider setting Sleep mode for longer overnight hours
Second Instagram account ("finsta")
- Look for multiple Instagram apps or accounts logged in under Settings > Accounts Center
- If found, decide together whether it can stay (with full Supervision) or must be removed
- Address the reason they wanted a separate account — often it's about social pressure
Using a browser instead of the app
- Instagram's full web version is accessible via Safari or Chrome
- Use iOS Screen Time "Allowed Websites Only" or Android Family Link site restrictions to block instagram.com on browsers
- Or set Social Media category limits that cover browsers
After a Bypass: Practical Steps
- Reconnect Supervision if it was disconnected
- Check all privacy settings are still correctly configured
- Review their follower/following list together if you have concerns
- Have an honest conversation about what drove the bypass
- Consider adjusting time limits if they seem too restrictive for their age
Quick Setup Checklist
Additional Resources
Instagram is now configured with appropriate protections. Teen Accounts and Supervision provide strong baseline safety, but ongoing conversations about healthy social media use are essential.
