Why we say caution
Clash Royale is a real-time strategy card game where players collect and upgrade cards to build decks and battle opponents. It features clan systems, ranked play, and regular challenges. The game is free to play, with a lot of in-app purchases.
- Spending PressureProgression is designed to encourage gem and pass purchases, from $0.99 to $99.99.
- Clan ChatJoining a clan means text chat with strangers. Every message is filtered, with a stricter filter for younger players.
- Emote ToxicityIn-game emotes are used to taunt opponents, which can be frustrating.
- Competitive PressureThe trophy ladder can cause stress and long sessions.
- Limited-Time OffersEvents and a rotating shop create urgency to buy now.
Talk about it
- Are you in a clan? Who's in it?Tells you who they're chatting with.
- How do you feel when you lose matches?Addresses competitive frustration.
- Do you feel like you need to buy gems to compete?Opens spending discussion.
Settings to change first
Turn on purchase approval on the device (Ask to Buy on iPhone, purchase verification in Google Play). Set up their Supercell ID with your email. Join Family Friendly or friends-only clans. Mute emotes if they bother them. Enter your child's real age, since younger players are limited to Family Friendly clans with a stricter chat filter.

The full guide
Clash Royale is a real-time strategy card game from Supercell (makers of Clash of Clans and Brawl Stars). Players collect cards and battle opponents in quick matches.
Understanding Clash Royale
What It Is
- Real-time strategy card game
- 3-minute 1v1 or 2v2 battles
- Collect and upgrade cards
- Join clans (player-made teams)
- Climb through arenas
Safety Considerations
- In-app purchases: Gems, passes and special offers, from $0.99 to $99.99
- Clan chat: Text chat with clan members
- Competitive: Losing can be frustrating
- Hard to put down: Daily rewards and events pull players back
Supercell ID
Set It Up with Your Email
Supercell suggests parents create the child's Supercell ID with a parent-controlled email. That gives you:
- Account recovery, with a code sent to your email at each login
- Progress saved across devices
- A look at your child's Supercell ID friend list
Supercell Store
Supercell also runs a web shop, the Supercell Store, where players sign in with their Supercell ID. As long as no payment details are added there, nothing can be bought.
In-App Purchase Controls
The Spending Pull
Clash Royale offers:
- Gems (premium currency)
- Limited-time offers
- Pass Royale each season
- Card and upgrade bundles
Turn On Purchase Approval
iPhone and iPad (from your iPhone with Family Sharing):
Turn on Require Purchase Approval.
Android:
Require verification for every purchase. With Google Family Link, you can also require your approval for all in-app purchases.
Clash Royale has no spending limit of its own. Purchases go through Apple or Google, so the device settings are what stop them. If no payment method is saved on your child's device, no purchase can be made.
Clan Features
What Are Clans?
Teams where players:
- Chat together
- Donate cards
- Take part in Clan Wars
- Complete clan activities
Clan Chat
Clan chat is text only. Every message passes through Supercell's word filter, and moderators review reports and use detection tools, but clan members are often strangers.
Younger players can only join Family Friendly clans, which use a stricter filter that blocks personal information and links to other sites. That only works if the age entered in the game is accurate.
For safety:
- Join with real-life friends, or create an invite-only clan for family
- Leave any clan with chat that feels wrong
- The game is fully playable without a clan
Report a Message
In the chat window, tap the message and select Report. Reports are reviewed within about 72 hours.
Communication Settings
In-Game Chat
- Emotes: Pre-set reactions during battles
- Clan chat: Text chat with clan members
Muting Emotes
Tap the mute button during a battle to hide the opponent's emotes.
Time Management
Designed to Bring Players Back
- Daily rewards and quests
- Limited-time events
- Seasonal passes
Setting Limits
Use the device's controls:
- iPhone: Screen Time limits for games
- Android: Google Family Link app limits
If your child needs a longer break, Supercell offers a self-exclusion option that a parent can request; they can restore the account later.
Recommended: 30–60 minutes a day
Competitive Frustration
Trophy System
- Win: gain trophies
- Lose: lose trophies
- Rankings can cause stress
Healthy Approach
Talk about:
- Losing is normal
- Taking a break when frustrated
- Trophies don't define you
- It's meant to be fun
Progress Without Paying
Free-to-Play Works
Clash Royale can be played without spending:
- Progress is slower
- Cards can be earned for free
- Skill matters more than card levels
Managing Expectations
- Free players can do well
- Upgrades take patience
- Focus on getting better
- No need to pay to enjoy it
Account Security
Supercell ID Protection
Link a Supercell ID to a parent email for recovery. Don't share the login.
Account Trading
Selling or buying accounts breaks Supercell's rules and can get an account banned. Advise against:
- Buying accounts
- Trading accounts
- Sharing login info
