The full guide
Hulu has a broad library that puts children's programming next to adult series, reality TV and mature movies. Its own parental controls are simpler than Netflix's or Disney+'s, so it helps to know what they do and don't cover.
Without a Kids profile and PIN Protection, children can browse Hulu's full library, including TV-MA series and R-rated movies.
If you have the Disney+ and Hulu bundle, Hulu's library also appears inside the Disney+ app, and Disney+ profile settings (content ratings, profile PINs, Junior Mode) apply to that Hulu content. Disney has said it plans to bring Hulu fully into Disney+, with a single app expected around the end of 2026. As of October 2026 the standalone Hulu app and Hulu subscriptions are still available. Profile Types
- Kids profile: Only titles picked for kids, in a simpler design
- Standard profile: The full Hulu library your plan includes
How Profiles Work
Each profile has its own recommendations and watch history. The main protection for a standard profile is PIN Protection, which puts a PIN in front of every non-Kids profile.
Setting Up a Kids Profile
Go to Manage Profiles
On hulu.com, hover over your profile icon (top right) and choose "Manage Profiles."
Add a Profile
Add a new profile and enter your child's name.
Make It a Kids Profile
Turn on the Kids option. The profile then only shows kids' titles in the Kids design.
Save the Profile
Save to apply the changes.
For children under 10, a Kids profile is the safest option on Hulu. Pair it with PIN Protection so they can't switch to a grown-up profile.
PIN Protection
Lock Every Non-Kids Profile
On hulu.com, hover over your name, click Manage Profiles, and turn on PIN Protection. Enter your Hulu password, then choose a PIN. After that, the PIN is needed to open any non-Kids profile.
Set this up on hulu.com in a web browser. Your Hulu password is needed to change the PIN or turn PIN Protection off.
Hulu's standard profiles can reach TV-MA and R-rated titles. Without PIN Protection, any child who opens Hulu can switch to them.
Teens on Hulu
Hulu's parental controls center on Kids profiles and PIN Protection rather than a rating cap you set for each profile. Your options for a teen:
- Keep them on a Kids profile a little longer
- Give them a standard profile behind PIN Protection that you unlock together
- If you have the bundle, have them watch Hulu inside the Disney+ app on a Disney+ profile with a content rating you choose
Hulu + Live TV (If Subscribed)
Live channels follow the TV schedule rather than your choices, so news and sports with adult ads can come up. Keep younger children on a Kids profile, and talk with older ones about what's on live TV.
Watch History
Review What's Been Watched
Each profile's watch history is in the Hulu app. You can remove titles from watch history so they stop shaping recommendations. Some personalization features aren't available on Kids profiles.
Screen Time
No Built-in Time Limits
Hulu does not include built-in watch time limits. Use device parental controls:
- iPhone and iPad: Screen Time
- Android: Google Family Link
- Smart TV: Your TV's built-in parental controls
Age-Based Recommendations
Ages 4–7
- Kids profile
- PIN Protection on
- Watch together when you can
- Daily limits set with device controls
Ages 8–12
- Kids profile
- PIN Protection on
- Look at watch history now and then
- Daily limits set with device controls
Ages 13–16
- A Disney+ profile with a TV-14 / PG-13 rating for Hulu content, if you have the bundle
- Or a standard Hulu profile you unlock together
- Open conversation about what they choose
Ages 17+
- Standard profile, with ongoing conversation
- More independence as they show good judgment
Common Issues
Child Got Into an Adult Profile
- Turn on PIN Protection right away
- Look at the watch history
- Talk about what they saw in an age-appropriate way
- Check every child is on the right kind of profile
Forgot Your PIN
You can change the PIN or turn PIN Protection off from Manage Profiles on hulu.com. You'll need your Hulu password.
