Steam is the world's largest PC gaming platform, with over 50,000 games, active social communities, and marketplace features. While it's an essential platform for PC gamers, it requires careful parental configuration to manage spending, mature content access, and playtime.
Steam requires users to be 13+ and includes games across all age ratings, from all-ages titles to Adults Only content. Parental controls restrict access but require active setup.
Steam hosts Adults Only (AO) rated games, including games with explicit sexual content. By default, these are hidden from search but can be unlocked in account preferences. Ensure this setting remains off on your teen's account.

Steam's current parental control system is Steam Families (launched 2024) — family account linking with purchase approval, playtime limits, and content restrictions. It replaced the older Family View PIN mode and Family Sharing. Family View still exists as a legacy option, but new parental control features are Steam Families-only.
Set up Steam Families first; use Family View only if family linking isn't possible.
Family View is the older PIN-based tool, being phased out in favor of Steam Families. It still works on a single account: you set a PIN that controls what features your child can access, and they must enter your PIN to access anything outside what you've approved.
In the Steam client: Steam menu → Settings → Family
Click "Manage Family View" and create a 4-digit PIN.
Choose what your child can access without the PIN:
Confirm your PIN and enable Family View. Your child will now have restricted access.
Family View is the legacy PIN-based restriction on a single account. Steam Families is the current, more comprehensive system — and the only one getting new features. Prefer Steam Families; fall back to Family View only if family linking isn't an option.

On your Steam account: Steam → Settings → Family → Create Family
Send an invitation to your teen's Steam account. They must accept.
Designate your teen's account as a "Child" in the family. This enables parental controls.
In Family settings, enable "Require approval for purchases." Your teen's purchase requests will come to you as notifications requiring your approval.

When enabled, your teen's purchase attempts trigger a notification to your Steam app. You approve or deny from your device.
Do not save credit cards or PayPal to your teen's account. Even with approval requirements, removing payment methods adds an additional barrier.
Steam Wallet (stored balance) can fund purchases without card approval. Don't add balance directly to your teen's account — approve specific purchases instead.
The Steam Community Marketplace allows buying and selling in-game items for real money. This can result in unexpected spending. Restrict community/marketplace access in your Steam Family's parental control settings.
Steam displays game ratings:
Set the maximum allowed rating. For a 13-year-old, T/PEGI 12 is appropriate. For a 15–16-year-old, M/PEGI 16 may be appropriate with discussion.
On your teen's account, ensure "Adults Only Sexual Content" is NOT enabled. This is disabled by default but verify.
Set daily and weekly playtime limits. When the limit is reached, Steam will notify your teen and can be set to require parental approval to continue.
Set time windows when gaming is allowed:
Most child development experts recommend no more than 1–2 hours of gaming per school day and 3–4 hours on weekends for teens. Start with these guidelines and adjust based on your family's needs.
For teen accounts:
Restrict chat and community access in the child account's parental controls if you don't want your teen chatting with strangers in Steam's community features.
Parental controls can block access to the Steam Community entirely — just the store and game library remain accessible.
Steam Workshop allows players to download user-created mods, maps, and items for games. This content isn't age-rated and can include anything from harmless gameplay tweaks to inappropriate content.
User-generated Workshop content bypasses Steam's rating system. For games that support it, be aware that your teen can download mods that may include content not in the original game.
See detailed reports of what games were played, for how long, and when.
Steam profiles show recently played games and hours. Check your teen's profile periodically.
Steam Families is now set up. With purchase approval and playtime limits active, you have meaningful oversight of your teen's PC gaming without eliminating the experience entirely.
