Xbox consoles offer robust parental controls through Microsoft Family Safety. This guide covers Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One, helping you create a safe gaming environment for your child.
10-17
Recommended Ages: Xbox is popular with tweens and teens. Use Microsoft Family Safety to customize controls based on your child's age and maturity.
Xbox parental controls work through Microsoft Family:
Family Organizer : You (the parent who sets up the family)
Adult Members : Other adults who can manage settings
Child Members : Children with age-appropriate restrictions
Cross-Platform
Microsoft Family Safety applies across Xbox, Windows PC, and mobile devices signed into the same account.
If you don't have one, create a Microsoft account at account.microsoft.com.

Set monthly maximum (e.g., $0, $10, $50)
Require approval for all purchases
Best Practice
Set spending to $0 and use Xbox gift cards to add specific amounts when you want to allow purchases.
Enable notifications to receive alerts whenever a purchase is attempted.
If your family has Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, be aware that your child can access hundreds of games, including some mature titles. Content restrictions still apply.
Xbox browsers and Edge respect Family Safety settings:
Your Child Content restrictions Web browsing
Options:
Block inappropriate sites : Filters adult content
Only allowed sites : Whitelist-only mode
Enable SafeSearch for Bing:
Your Child Content restrictions Search
This filters inappropriate search results.
Enable weekly activity reports:

Attempted access to restricted content
Reports come via email and appear in the app.
Some settings apply to the console itself:
Require a passcode to sign in as a specific profile:
Profile & system Settings Account Sign-in, security & passkey
This prevents your child from accessing your adult account.
Disable guest accounts to prevent creating unrestricted profiles:
Profile & system Settings System Guest mode
Even offline, content restrictions apply. However, screen time can only be enforced when online.
Set up Restricted Mode within the YouTube app:
Open YouTube
Go to Settings → General → Restricted Mode
Enable and lock
Use each app's built-in parental controls to set appropriate profiles and PINs.
Online multiplayer requires a Game Pass subscription (Xbox Live Gold has been retired):
Game Pass Essential : Basic online multiplayer + a small game library ($9.99/month)
Game Pass Ultimate : Full game library, cloud gaming, and more ($29.99/month)
Without a subscription, online multiplayer in paid games is blocked by default (an extra layer of protection). Free-to-play games like Fortnite and Roblox don't require a subscription for online play, however.
