Macs run the same Screen Time framework as iPhones and iPads, which makes supervision straightforward once you link your child's Mac account to Family Sharing. This guide covers what your child will actually do on a Mac, what to watch for, and how to configure controls.
A shared family Mac for schoolwork can start as early as age 8 with strict controls. A personal Mac typically makes sense around middle school.

If you see your child switching to a different browser you didn't install, installing VPN apps, or creating accounts with non-family email addresses, those are signs worth a conversation.
Screen Time filters web content in Safari and Chrome automatically, but your child can sideload Firefox or Brave and browse freely unless you block app installations.
Apps from the Mac App Store are sandboxed and age-gated. Apps downloaded from the web (.dmg installers) are NOT automatically age-restricted. Use Screen Time to block installations outside the App Store.
iMessage on Mac syncs with your child's iPhone/iPad. You can see contacts via Family Sharing, but conversation content is end-to-end encrypted and not visible to parents.
