Understand why GTA V is rated M for Mature, what content it contains, and how to make informed decisions about this popular but extremely adult game.
Talk about it
- What have you seen of GTA at friends' houses or on YouTube?Tells you how much they already know, so the talk starts from what they've actually seen.
- What do you think the game is poking fun at?Opens a real conversation about satire and violence, which goes further than a flat no.
- What would make waiting easier, and is there a game you'd like instead?Gives them something to say yes to, and keeps the decision from feeling like a punishment.
- What will you do if a friend puts it on when you're over?Agreeing on a plan ahead of time makes the family rule easier to keep away from home.

What About GTA VI?
Grand Theft Auto VI comes out November 19, 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, and pre-orders are open. Expect your child to start asking for it. The ESRB has rated it M (Mature 17+) for the same descriptors as GTA V: Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Mature Humor, Nudity, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content, and Use of Drugs and Alcohol, with in-game purchases. Everything in this guide (the content concerns, the conversations and the platform restrictions) applies to GTA VI too.
Why Children Want to Play
- Friends are playing
- Popular with streamers/YouTubers
- "Everyone else" plays it
- The game looks exciting
- FOMO and social pressure
Having the Conversation
Acknowledge Their Interest
"I understand your friends play GTA and it looks exciting. Let me explain why I don't think it's right for you yet."
Explain the Content
Age-appropriately explain:
- "It has content that's meant for adults, not for kids"
- "There are things in the game that could be disturbing"
- "The game rewards criminal behavior which isn't okay"
Stand Firm
- "I know it's frustrating, but this is my decision"
- "We can revisit this when you're older"
- "There are lots of other great games we can find"
Enforcing the Restriction
Platform Parental Controls
PlayStation:
Set to age 16 or lower to block M-rated games
Xbox:
Set to Teen or lower
PC:
- Don't purchase the game
- Use Windows Family Safety to block if already installed
Staying in the Loop
- Look over the game library together now and then
- Be aware of friend sharing (game sharing features)
- Know they might play at friends' houses
Friends' Houses
Have a conversation about your family rules applying everywhere. Consider:
- Informing other parents
- Discussing with your child beforehand
- Being understanding but firm
If You Decide to Allow (17+)
For older teens at 17:
GTA Online Settings
Voice chat in GTA Online is off by default. Check that it stays that way:
- Leave Voice Chat Enabled set to Off, or limit who they hear from Interaction Menu › Preferences › Voice Chat (Everyone, Crew, Friends, Crew + Friends or No-One)
- Mute a player from Pause Menu › Online › Players › the player › Toggle Mute
- Play in invite-only or friends-only sessions
Spending Controls
Remove payment methods to prevent Shark Card purchases (real money for in-game cash), and set spending limits on the console.
Discussion Points
- This is a game, not reality
- Criminal behavior has real consequences
- The game satirizes society but isn't a model for it
- Violence is never the answer in real life

- Minecraft: Creative building, exploration
- Lego Games: Family-friendly open worlds
- Fortnite: Battle royale without GTA's content

If They Want "Grown-Up" Games

- Far Cry series: M-rated shooters with less controversial content
Red Flags to Watch For
If your child is playing GTA despite restrictions:

- Reinforce family values
Quick Summary
Additional Resources
GTA V is designed for adults. There are no parental control settings that make it appropriate for children. The best approach is to not allow access until they're mature enough to understand the context.
