Talk about it

  • What's your favorite thing to watch on Disney+ right now?Starts from what they enjoy and makes it easy to keep talking about their shows.
  • Have you seen anything in Marvel or Star Wars that felt too intense? Those films can be scarier than the characters suggest, and asking makes it normal to say so.
  • Do you know why your profile is set up the way it is?Explaining the settings together helps them see the limits as care, not punishment.
  • Want to watch the first episode of that new show together?A shared first episode lets you judge a series and gives you something to talk about.

The full guide

Disney+ is one of the most family-friendly streaming services, with Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars and National Geographic titles. For subscribers with the Disney+ and Hulu bundle, Hulu's library also appears inside the Disney+ app, which brings TV-MA shows and R-rated movies into the same app. Profile settings on Disney+ also apply to that Hulu content, so the controls below cover both.

Understanding Disney+ Profiles

Profile Types

  • Standard profile: Sees titles up to the content rating set on the profile
  • Junior Mode profile: A space for younger viewers with titles suitable for all ages, no commercial breaks and a simpler design (Junior Mode was called "Kids Profile" in older versions of the app)

Why Profiles Matter

Each profile can have:

  • Its own content rating
  • Its own recommendations and Continue Watching row
  • A 4-digit profile PIN
  • Its own avatar and name
Setting Up a Junior Mode Profile
1

Go to Edit Profiles

Select your profile icon and choose "Edit Profiles" (on the web, disneyplus.com/edit-profiles).

2

Add a New Profile

Choose "Add Profile" and enter your child's name.

3

Turn On Junior Mode

Turn on Junior Mode. You can switch it on or off in the Disney+ app or a supported web browser at any time. The primary profile can't be a Junior Mode profile.

4

Turn On Kid-Proof Exit

In the profile's settings, turn on Kid-Proof Exit. Your child then has to complete an exit challenge to leave Junior Mode.

What Junior Mode Restricts

  • Only shows titles suitable for viewers of all ages
  • Content ratings can't be changed on a Junior Mode profile
  • Leaves out unrated live content such as sports and news
  • No commercial interruptions

Setting Content Ratings for Standard Profiles

Profile IconEdit ProfilesSelect ProfileContent Rating

Each profile has its own rating, and titles above it are hidden. The primary profile, and any profile with a date of birth showing 18 or older, starts at TV-MA. For a 10-year-old, PG is usually right. For teens, PG-13 may be appropriate with discussion.

Unrated Live Content

Under Parental Controls on a profile, you can turn off "Allow titles without ratings like live sports, news, and more" to hide unrated live content. Junior Mode profiles already leave these out.

Profile PIN

Lock Your Adult Profile

Profile IconEdit ProfilesYour ProfileProfile PIN

Set a four-digit profile PIN. This keeps children out of your profile and the mature titles in it.

Lock a Teen's Profile from Younger Siblings

If you have children of different ages, lock older children's profiles so younger ones can't switch into them.

Restrict Profile Creation

Stop New, Unrestricted Profiles

AccountRestrict Profile Creation

On your Account page (disneyplus.com/account), turn on the profile creation restriction. Your password is then needed to create a new profile, so a child can't make their own unrestricted one.

Content Worth Knowing About

Marvel Content

Most Marvel Cinematic Universe films are rated PG-13 and include:

  • Significant violence
  • Intense action sequences
  • Mature themes

Worth previewing before younger children watch.

Star Wars Content

Ranges from the more family-friendly Clone Wars series (TV-PG) to Andor and some films with darker themes. Review before allowing.

National Geographic

Includes nature documentaries that may show predators, animal death and difficult topics. Often fine for older children with some context.

Viewing Activity

Check What Your Child Has Watched

Disney+'s parental controls don't include a viewing-history report. The Continue Watching row on your child's profile shows what they've started recently.

Autoplay Controls

Turn Off Autoplay

Profile IconEdit ProfilesChild's ProfileAutoplay

Turn off Autoplay so the next episode doesn't start by itself. Repeat this for each profile.

GroupWatch and SharePlay

Watching Remotely Together

Disney+ discontinued its GroupWatch feature (synchronized viewing with remote friends and family) in 2023. Remote watch-together now happens through device features like Apple's SharePlay, where supported.

Screen Time

No Built-in Timer

Disney+ does not include a viewing time limit. Use your device's parental controls:

  • iPhone and iPad Screen Time
  • Google Family Link on Android
  • Smart TV parental controls
