Whisper
Use With CareWhisper let users post anonymous 'secrets' and message other users. The combination of anonymity and location-based features made it risky for minors: kids sharing personal struggles could be found and messaged directly by strangers. The service quietly went offline in 2025 after being pulled from the app stores, but the pattern it pioneered lives on in other anonymous apps.

Security researchers found an unprotected Whisper database holding about 900 million records going back to 2012, including users' ages, hometowns, group memberships and the location of their last post. Whisper removed access after being notified.
