Understanding Discord

Discord started as a voice chat app for gamers but has grown into a massive platform for all types of communities. It can be used safely, but requires proper configuration and awareness.

How Discord Works

Servers - Like group chats with multiple channels

Public servers anyone can join
Private servers by invitation only
Can contain text, voice, and video channels

Direct Messages - One-on-one or group conversations

Voice Channels - Real-time voice chat, sometimes with video

Why Discord Needs Oversight

Public Server Risks

Anyone can join public servers
Some servers have inappropriate content
Predators lurk in popular gaming communities
NSFW content may be accessible

Direct Message Risks

By default, anyone in a shared server can DM your child (teen accounts get these as message requests)
Friend requests from strangers

Essential Settings to Configure

Sensitive Content Filters (replaced the old "Safe Direct Messaging")
- Settings → Content & Social → Sensitive media
- Blocks or blurs explicit media in DMs
Server DM Settings
- Settings → Content & Social → Social Permissions
- Turn off direct messages from server members
Friend Request Settings
- Settings → Content & Social → Friend Requests
- Consider "Friends of Friends" only
Message Requests
- Keep message requests on so messages from people they may not know wait in a separate inbox

Family Center and Age Checks

Family Center (Settings → Family Center) gives parents weekly summaries of who their teen messaged, called, and which servers and friends they added - though not message content. Since November 2025, a connected parent can also manage who can message their teen and the sensitive content filter. Your teen must opt in.
Since September 22, 2026, Discord sorts every account worldwide into an adult or teen group from account signals. Teen and unconfirmed accounts keep stricter defaults, and only users who confirm they are adults (by facial age estimation, ID or another method) can enter age-restricted spaces or loosen those settings. UK and Australian users have faced these checks since 2025.
