Talk about it
- What have you been watching on Prime Video lately? An easy, everyday way to stay close to what they choose without it feeling like a check-up.
- If you see something to rent or buy, what should you do first?Rentals and purchases land on your Amazon account, so agreeing on this ahead of time avoids surprise charges.
- Has anything you watched felt too grown-up or confusing?Gives them an easy opening to bring up something they stumbled on without worrying about getting in trouble.
- Which profile do you usually watch on?Tells you whether they're staying on their own profile or drifting into a grown-up one.
The full guide
Amazon Prime Video comes with an Amazon Prime membership and includes everything from children's shows to mature dramas and R-rated movies. With Kids profiles, a Prime Video PIN and purchase restrictions, you can give each child an experience that fits their age.
Prime Video sits on your Amazon account, so rentals, purchases and add-on subscriptions are easy to start by accident. Turn on purchase restrictions so a PIN is needed.
Understanding Prime Video Profiles
Profile Types
An Amazon account can have up to six Prime Video profiles: the main profile plus up to five more, each of which can be an adult, teen or Kids profile.
- Adult profile: Sees what your viewing restrictions allow on that device
- Teen profile: Titles rated 18+ (and NC-17, R or not rated) need the Account PIN
- Kids profile: Only titles rated for 12 and under
What a Kids Profile Does
- Shows only age-appropriate titles (12 and under), including in search and suggestions
- Doesn't allow purchases
- Some videos may include promotional breaks
Titles downloaded from any profile on a device, including adult profiles, can still be opened from a Kids profile on that device. Clear grown-up downloads off a shared tablet.
Setting Up a Kids Profile
Open Your Profiles
In Prime Video, select your profile icon, then choose to add or edit profiles.
Add a Kids Profile
Add a new profile, enter your child's name and choose the Kids profile type.
Lock Grown-Up Profiles
A Kids profile can't buy anything, but your child could still switch to your profile. Lock adult profiles with a PIN (below).
Save and Switch
Save the profile and switch to it to check what your child will see.
The Prime Video PIN
Create Your Account PIN
Choose Manage next to "Account PIN and locks," sign in to Amazon if asked, then create the Prime Video Account PIN.
The Account PIN:
- Gets past purchase and viewing restrictions on any profile
- Overrides every profile lock PIN
- Can stop profiles from being created or removed
- Applies on all your devices once it's set
The Account PIN bypasses both purchase and viewing restrictions. Choose a code your child won't guess, and don't type it where they can see.
Creating the PIN doesn't turn on any limits. You still need to switch on purchase restrictions and viewing restrictions.
Purchase Restrictions
Why This Matters
Prime Video lets you rent and buy movies and shows, and add channel subscriptions. Without purchase restrictions, a child can make purchases charged to your Amazon account.
Turn On Purchase Restrictions
Turn on purchase restrictions so the Prime Video PIN is needed before any purchase. Purchase restrictions apply to every profile and every device on your account.
Viewing Restrictions
Set an Age Limit
Choose an age restriction and the devices it should apply to, then select Save. In the iPhone and iPad app, it's under your profile icon, then Settings, Permissions, Viewing Restrictions.
Prime Video's US levels are:
- Kids (All)
- Older Kids (7+)
- Teens (13+)
- Young Adults (16+)
- Adults (18+)
Titles above the level you choose need the PIN to play.
Viewing restrictions only apply to the devices you select. Check every TV, tablet and phone your child uses.
Profile PIN Lock
Keep Kids Out of Grown-Up Profiles
All profiles can be locked with a PIN. Lock your adult profile and any teen profile you don't want younger children using. You set profile locks from the same "Account PIN and locks" page, and the account holder can restrict creating new profiles there too.
Watch History
View and Manage History
Review what has been watched on the profile. This is a quick way to spot anything unexpected.
Hide Titles from History
You can hide a title from watch history so it no longer shapes recommendations.
Amazon Kids+ and the Parent Dashboard
What Is Amazon Kids+?
Amazon Kids+ is a paid subscription of kids' books, apps, games and videos, used mostly on Fire tablets and Echo devices. Check Amazon's site for the current monthly price.
The Amazon Parent Dashboard
Amazon's free parental tools (the Amazon Parent Dashboard at parents.amazon.com) don't need a Kids+ subscription. On Amazon Kids devices they let you:
- Set daily time limits
- Use "Learn First" to put educational content before entertainment
- Pause your child's device remotely
For families with young children on Fire tablets, Amazon Kids and the Parent Dashboard are worth a look. See the Amazon Fire Tablet guide for setup.
Fire TV and Fire Tablet
Fire TV Parental Controls
Fire TV devices have their own parental controls that you manage on the device itself. Turn them on and use your PIN for:
- Purchases
- Content above a chosen rating
- Changing parental control settings
Fire Tablet (Separate Controls)
Fire tablets have their own parental controls through Amazon Kids. See the Amazon Fire Tablet guide for device-specific setup.
Screen Time
No Built-in Watch Timer
Prime Video doesn't have a built-in watch timer. Use:
- The Amazon Parent Dashboard on Amazon Kids devices
- iPhone and iPad Screen Time
- Google Family Link on Android
- Smart TV parental controls
