Talk about it
- What's your favorite thing to do on the tablet right now?It tells you which apps and videos to look at in the Parent Dashboard, and it starts on their side of the screen.
- Do you want to set the reading goal together before games unlock?Kids accept Learn First more easily when they helped pick the number.
- What should you do if something pops up that feels weird or scary?Agreeing on 'come and show me' ahead of time makes it easy for them to tell you.
- When the tablet turns off for the night, where should it sleep?Charging it outside the bedroom backs up the schedule you set without a nightly argument.

The full guide
Amazon Fire tablets are among the most popular tablets for kids, offering affordable hardware with strong built-in parental controls. Amazon Kids (formerly FreeTime) gives each child a profile that shows only the content you allow.
Understanding Your Options
Fire tablets offer two approaches:
- Amazon Kids profile (Recommended): A separate kid profile with age-filtered content
- Standard Parental Controls: Restrictions on a regular Fire tablet profile
For children under 12, an Amazon Kids profile is the simplest, most controlled setup. Older kids can get a Teen profile instead, which is chosen based on the birth date you enter.
Amazon Kids Setup
What's Included
Amazon Kids: Free child profiles with parental controls Amazon Kids+: Subscription that adds a large library of books, videos, games, and apps. Amazon lists it from $7.99/month for Prime members ($8.99/month without Prime) as of October 2026.
Creating a Child Profile
Open Profiles
From the Fire tablet home screen, swipe down and tap Settings, then:
Add a Child
Enter:
- Child's name
- Birth date (sets the age filter, and whether it's an Amazon Kids or Teen profile)
- Profile picture
Then tap Add Profile. You can create up to four child profiles.
Set a Lock Screen PIN
If your own profile doesn't have a lock screen PIN or password yet, the tablet asks you to create one. That PIN is what keeps your child from leaving their profile or changing settings.
Choose a PIN your child won't guess. It is the only thing between their profile and yours.
Choose Content
Choose which titles from your library to share with your child:
- Books
- Videos
- Apps & Games
If you have Amazon Kids+, its age-filtered library appears automatically.
Customizing Amazon Kids
Most settings live in the Amazon Parent Dashboard: at parents.amazon.com, in the free Parent Dashboard app for iPhone and Android, or on the tablet itself. Select your child's profile to see them.
Daily Time Limits
Turn on Daily Time Limits, then set:
- Total Screen Time: Overall daily limit
- Limits by activity: Different limits for reading, videos, and apps if you want them
Example configuration:
- Total: 2 hours
- Books: Unlimited, to encourage reading
- Videos: 1 hour
- Games: 1 hour
Schedule (Bedtime)
In the same Daily Screen Time settings, use "Schedule" to choose the hours the profile can be used each day.
Example: Available 7 AM to 7 PM
Outside these hours, the profile can't be used.
Learn First
Require learning before entertainment:
Example: 30 minutes of reading before games and videos unlock.
Learn First helps balance screen time: kids read or learn before they can play games.
Content Management
Age Filters
Content is filtered based on your child's birth date. To change it, select the gear next to your child's name in the Parent Dashboard, then:
Add Content
Add specific apps, books, or videos you already own to your child's profile:
Sources:
- Amazon Kids+ library
- Your purchased content
- Specific apps from the Amazon Appstore
Remove Content
Remove anything that doesn't fit from the same Amazon Content list.
Web Browser Settings
Choose a Browser Setting
Options:
- Off: No web access (safest)
- Hand-Selected Websites & Videos: Only sites and videos picked by Amazon or you
- Filtered Websites & Videos: A wider set of filtered sites, where you can also block specific ones
For children under 8, we recommend keeping the web browser off.
Store Access and Purchases
Amazon Kids profiles keep purchases with you. To choose whether your child can request apps or books from the store, go to:
Parent Dashboard
Check Activity
Open the Parent Dashboard at parents.amazon.com or in the Parent Dashboard app.
View:
- Time spent by category
- Books read
- Apps and videos used
You can also change time limits and filters remotely.
Multiple Children
Separate Profiles
Create individual profiles for each child (up to four):
- Each has their own age filter
- Individual time limits
- Separate content libraries
- Activity shown separately
Switching Profiles
Your child stays in their profile. Leaving it, or switching to yours, needs your lock screen PIN or password.
Standard Fire Tablet Controls
If not using an Amazon Kids profile (for older children):
Parental Controls
Amazon designs these controls for an adult profile used by someone 13 or older; for younger children, use an Amazon Kids profile. Turn on Restrict access to current profile and create a parental controls password. It's separate from your lock screen password, so write it down: if you forget it, the only way back to full access is a factory reset.
What it can restrict:
- Web browsing
- Email, Contacts and Calendar apps
- Buying from the Amazon Store or Amazon Shop app
- Prime Video playback
- Content types such as apps and games, books and music
- Wireless connections
- Camera
- Location services
Turning on Parental Controls doesn't hide mature or adult-rated titles, which can still show up in apps, books, music and store search.
Amazon Household
Add your teen to your Amazon Household so you can set up purchase approvals without the Amazon Kids interface.
